WET has recently completed a project in Asulau in the Ermera District in conjunction with the Bakhita Centre. The project has improved community hygiene conditions and accessibility of potable water through the construction of a water system with four new water tanks and refurbishment of two community toilets in the village. Previously 240 families did not have potable water or a functional toilet. The project solves the village's water problems and also other related sanitation and hygiene issues.
Asulau has a total population of about 1,400 (214 households) with farming as the main occupation, and 220 children at primary school. It is regarded as the one of the most deprived villages in the region. The Bakhita Water Team has installed a water system that provides running water from a perennial spring which has been diverted to a small weir. Water is now piped about 2 km to the Asulau village. The project includes supply and installation of 4 plastic 5000L tanks and smaller holding tanks location throughout the village. A separate pipeline supplies water to water points and handwashing stands at the school. |
