About us

Water East Timor (WET) is a group of people with a commitment to providing clean water and sanitation systems to rural villages in Timor-Leste. Over the past 15 years, WET has funded a number of projects that have changed the lives of villagers, and have provided a model for further projects in more remote regions. With the support of small teams of local tradespeople and the Warrnambool East Rotary Club, WET has been able to teach Timorese rural communities the skills to construct, implement and maintain water systems. Individuals and service groups work in partnership to donate money, time and expertise to fund the water systems.

About Timor-Leste
Timor-Leste (formerly known as East Timor) is one of Australia's nearest neighbours and amongst the poorest nations in the world. Despite the commitments from Australia and other donor countries, Timor-Leste is still facing serious deficiencies in health care, nutrition and sanitation. Many of the serious illnesses that confront the people of Timor-Leste are due to unsafe or inadequate supplies of running water. WET is one of many organisations that are working to improve the lives of Timorese through clean water projects.

Launch of WET-funded water project in Taurema
In September 2022, our WET President, Greta Perry, travelled to Timor-Leste* for the launch of the WET-funded project to supply water to the village of Taurema in Ermera district.

The project provided running water to around 250 people, 50 houses, and a primary school with around 120 students. Water was sourced from a perennial spring which is not shared with other villages and runs all year round.

The report of Greta's visit is available here.

* Greta Perry, WET President, visited Timor-Leste and Taurema at her own expense. No WET funds were used for her travel. In-country travel support was provided by Eddie de Pina and the Bakhita Centre.

ASULAU WATER PROJECT Nov-Dec 2022
WET is currently planning a new project in Asulau in conjunction with the Bakhita Centre in Ermera District. The project aims to improve community hygiene conditions and accessibility of potable water through the construction of a water system with four new water tanks and refurbishment of two community toilets in the village. Currently 240 families do not have potable water or a functional toilet. The project will solve the village's water problems and also other related problems sanitation and hygiene.

Asulau has a total population of about 1,400 (214 households) with farming as the main occupation, and 220 children still at primary school. It is regarded as the most deprived village in the region.

The Bakhita Water Team will install a water system that will provide running water from a perennial spring which will be diverted to a small weir that will then be piped about 2 km to the Asulau village. The projects includes supply and installation of 4 plastic 5000L tanks and smaller holding tanks location thoughout the village.  A separate pipeline will supply water to water points and handwashing stands at the school.
